This year has brought on a veritable tidal wave of new skincare lines created by savvy celebrities.
“Makeup and skin care are what’s hot for would-be moguls. They are bigger slices of the beauty industry — skin care alone accounts for anywhere from 45-60% of the profits, depending on which figures you use — and they are now easier to get into than ever,” according to the New York Times. “Thanks to e-commerce, they require less capital because there’s no need to hire a department store sales force to push products. And with social media, there’s a big savings on marketing, since a huge chunk of it is often the cost of the celebrity’s own time on Instagram.”
From clean formulations, to gender free labels, to self-care themed bundles, check out the latest slate of celebrity-backed skincare releases:
Humanrace Skincare
The singer, producer, and designer Pharrell recently released Humanrace Skincare, a line of three, gender-free formulations.
“Humanrace Skincare doesn’t differentiate by race or gender,” said Williams. “We’re creating for humans; we are all born in the same skin and Humanrace celebrates this.”
Dubbed the “Three Minute Facial,” the trio of hero products includes a Rice Powder Cleanser, the Lotus Enzyme Exfoliator, formulated with 8% glycolic acid, and a squalene-based Humidifying Cream.
The line was created with Williams’s dermatologist Elena Jones, and is fragrance-free, vegan, and clean. Additionally, the HumanRace formulations tap into the booming consumer demand for eco-friendly skincare. All three products come in bright green, refillable containers that are made up of 50% post-consumer recycled landfill plastic.
Lauren Conrad Beauty
Lauren Conrad Beauty first launched in August 2020, as a direct-to-consumer rollout. After initial success, the reality television star turned entrepreneur debuted her skincare and beauty line at select Kohl’s stores and on Kohls.com in October 2020.
All of the skincare products in the line are certified-clean, vegan, and cruelty-free, as well as “environmentally friendly and ethically sourced.” The skincare offerings include face creams, facial cleansers, a toner, a makeup remover balm, an all-over balm, and a Vitamin C serum.
“We believe that beauty is a strategic area of growth for Kohl’s, and we see a tremendous opportunity ahead as consumers are investing in clean ingredients,” said Doug Howe, Kohl’s chief merchandising officer, according to BizWomen.
In addition to the skincare products, the Lauren Conrad Beauty line also includes bath and body products, color cosmetics, and accessories.
EleVen by Venus Williams
The superstar tennis champ Venus Williams just launched two new suncare products, as a collaboration between her lifestyle brand EleVen and Credo Beauty, a clean beauty retailer.
The EleVen by Venus William suncare line includes a 35 SPF sun serum and a SPF 30 sunscreen. The hydrating sun serum uses 25% zinc oxide to offer sun protection and prickly pear to increase hydration.
New celebrity skincare lines focus on green and clean claims!
The On-the-Defense SPF 30 sunscreen is also mineral based and uses 25% zinc oxide to provide reef-safe sun protection.
Both of the formulas are heralded for their ability to “glide into the skin” and lack of whitecast or chalky residue.
“Up until recently, there weren’t many suitable options for brown to deep skin tones, as many formulas would leave a white cast or appear ashy,” explains Allure. “Thankfully, in recent years, there’s been an uptick of companies creating SPF for everyone, not just a small segment of the population, though they’re often of the chemical variety. EleVen by Venus x Credo is filling a gap in the market for shoppers looking for a mineral option that’s lightweight and universally flattering.
Soulcare by Alicia Keys
““Up until recently, there weren’t many suitable suncare options for brown to deep skin tones, as many formulas would leave a white cast or appear ashy.”
Allure
As part of the singer’s new beauty and lifestyle brand Soulcare, Alicia Keys recently debuted her first skincare products, under a bundle called “The First Ritual.”
The First Ritual includes a candle, a facial cream, and a facial roller. The First Ritual products are clean, cruelty-free, and dermatologist-developed, and come with an affirmation to recite before usage.
The Skin Transformation Cream is designed to hydrate and plump skin with peptides and gently exfoliate with bakuchiol, a plant-based alternative to retinol. Additionally, the obsidian facial roller is to be used for facial massage and toning, like a jade or rose quartz roller.
Soulcare is a partnership with drugstore brand, E.l.f Cosmetics. More products are expected to roll out in 2021.
JLo Beauty
Jennifer Lopez, the singer and actress frequently lauded for her glowing skin, launches her eponymous skincare line JLo Beauty on January 1, 2021. The debut features eight skincare products, including a serum, gel-cream cleanser, a sheet mask, and an eye cream.
“The hero ingredient is a secret from my mom and aunt: olive oil. It’s nature’s secret ingredient we don’t use enough of, but you also don’t want to smell like a salad. So the JLo Beauty Olive Complex is a modernized version with olive-derived squalane, fermented oil, olive leaf extract, and extra-virgin olive oil,” Lopez told Allure.
JLoBeauty will be sold online at jlobeauty.com, Amazon.com, and at Sephora.
